Welcome to In The Weeds
The Diary of a Southern Farmer
I’m Nik Stephney, a Southern farmer, storyteller, and the steward behind Voyage Farms. In The Weeds is my living journal exploring what it means to grow food and medicine in the South.
My story begins in Texas. My family is from 5th Ward, Houston, though our roots stretch across Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. I didn’t grow up on a farm, but I grew up on stories about the country. About Big Mama’s land. About my Granny, who was a beloved cook and gardener.
Voyage is my offering back to them. A small micro farm in Columbia, South Carolina where we grow herbs, flowers, and medicine. Along the way, I’ve learned that farming is about more than profitable crops. It’s about remembering, healing and coming home to the land.
Each episode is a slow walk through that remembering. You’ll find field notes from my backyard farm in South Carolina, reflections on Black agrarian traditions, stories about food as medicine, and lessons I’m learning in real-time.
This is a love letter to the South, to small growers, to anyone trying to live and create outside of extractive systems.

Wow! My heart is so happy hearing you speak and sharing this vision. In the future, we are deeply connected with our community and with the land and what you are harvesting towards is a future I want to exist in. I am looking forward to following this journey, and hopefully if there is an opportunity to volunteer and help support this journey. Wishing all the success to this farm and all the blessings to you and your family.
